Heavyweight work shirt

A durable pocket tee—if a loose, substantial fit is what you want.

The Carhartt K87 is a longstanding heavyweight work shirt with a loose cut and chest pocket. Its strengths are simplicity and coverage; its main tradeoffs are heat and sizing.

The buying decision

Choose the K87 if you want a loose heavyweight T-shirt that can stand alone on the job or layer over a base shirt. Carhartt lists a roomy chest and shoulder fit, a rib-knit crewneck, side-seam construction, tagless label, and left chest pocket. It is a basic rather than a performance shirt.

Pass if you want moisture-wicking technical fabric, a trim athletic cut, sun-protection certification, high visibility, or FR protection. A heavyweight cotton shirt can absorb sweat and dry slowly. In humid coastal heat, a lighter performance shirt may be more comfortable for sustained outdoor work.

Loose fit means measure before ordering

Carhartt describes the K87 as loose through the chest and shoulders. That extra room helps with bending and lifting, but buyers accustomed to slimmer shirts may find it oversized. Compare your chest measurement with the current chart and decide whether the shirt will be worn alone or over another layer.

Tall sizes add body and sleeve length. They can help when reaching overhead, but excessive loose fabric may snag around equipment. Clothing near moving machinery must follow the equipment maker's and employer's rules.

Fabric varies by color

Carhartt states that most colors are cotton, while Heather Gray and other heathers or bright safety-style colors use different cotton-polyester blends. The selected color can therefore change feel, drying behavior, and shrinkage. Read the exact color's fiber content rather than assuming every K87 is identical.

The pocket is useful—but limited

The chest pocket handles a pencil, small notepad, or lightweight item. It is not secure storage for a phone while climbing or bending, and it should not carry sharp tools. Use purpose-built holders where dropped objects or punctures are hazards.

Hot-weather and sun considerations

A short-sleeve heavyweight cotton shirt provides less arm coverage than long sleeves and may feel warm when saturated. It should not be described as sun protective unless the exact garment carries a verified rating. For exposed outdoor work, combine clothing with shade, sunscreen, hydration, and the site's heat plan.

Before ordering

Confirm model K87, regular or tall length, color-specific material, chest size, and seller return terms. Multipacks and single shirts can appear together in Amazon results. If work pants are the larger need, see the Ariat Rebar M4, Wrangler RIGGS Ranger, and our three-brand comparison.
